EARLY VIDEO OF SAITO SENSEI (Iwama) C.1964

A great bit of footage of Saito Sensei performing ‘basic’ techniques outdoors.

Very interesting to watch how his movement and especially his bokken cuts are performed, compared to later on in his career. This proves to me that even one of “The Greats” like Saito sensei were constantly evolving their technique, making the notion of one style of Aikido being ‘better’ than another ludicrous!

  3. Great video – thanks for posting it. Such an example of strength and control in relaxation. I note his care in folding the uke's fingers before the throw in shiho-nage and kote-gaeshi. Interestingly, at the beginning of katate-dori shiho-nage, he keeps the uke's hand low. Not at all to criticize, but this can leave one open to a blow from the attacker. Raising the hand in a kokkyo maneuver can block the attacker from that option. Again, thanks for posting.
